Minutes of June 15, 2011 Meeting
Bayham Municipal Office, Straffordville, Ontario

1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice-Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm
2. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST: None
3. AGENDA: It was moved by C.Buchanan and seconded by J. Woon that the
agenda be approved with additions. Motion Carried.

4. MINUTES: It was moved by L.Acre and seconded by C.Buchanan
that the minutes of the May 11, 2011 meeting be approved as written. Motion
Carried.
5. CORRESPONDENCE:
6. REPORTS:
A) Marine Museum Report: Summer Students have submitted a monthly
report as well as 7 written questions concerning U.S. money, hours, lights.
postcards, photography.buoys &parking lot use. C.Buchanan and
L.Millard have addressed these questions.
B) Edison Museum Report: Summer students have submitted a monthly
report.
B) New Edison Building Committee: A meeting was held Tuesday May 31,
2011 at 7:00 pm at the Edison Museum. A local landowner has offered to
donate a used pack barn to be used for the new Edison Museum. There
would be no charge for the building, however we would have to cover all
costs to dismantle and rebuild the barn ourselves. It was moved by
M.Schafer and seconded by L.Acre that Museums Bayham release $600 -
$800 from our building fund reserve, for an engineering study to
determine whether or not we can use such materials for museum quality
purposes. Motion Carried.

7.MATTERS OUT OF THE MINUTES:
a) EON Student Training: On June 11, our students received training at the County
building. C.Buchanan volunteered at the Marine Museum & Lighthouse that day while
B.Hickey volunteered at the Edison Museum.
b) May 27 Wallenstein School Tour: On May 27, 2011 there were 27 students and 5
adults touring the museums from the St. Jacobs area.
c) Navy Blues Fest Museum Coverage: B.Hickey opened both the Marine Museum
and Lighthouse on May 14 to accommodate Blues Fest visitors.
d) Flagpole painted: KC Emerson had the key to lower the flagpole at the Edison
Museum. It has been lowered, painted and raised again.
e) Summer Student Staffing: Janine Zylstra, one of our 5 summer students, has been
appointed as "supervisor" of both museums. Janine is studying to become a
museum curator.
f) Edison Brickwork Repairs: The chairman obtained a written quote from Robert
Dancey to repair the concrete step and brick work for $2500 + hst. It was moved by
C.Buchanan and seconded by J.Woon that R.Dancey be hired to repair the
brickwork and step for $2500 + list. Motion Carried.
g) Vienna Anglican Church Anniversary: M.Schafer thanked the 3 committee
members who attended the 150`x' Anniversary of Vienna Anglican Church.
h) Railway Museum artefacts: Curator Mike Adams reports that the marine related
lanterns have not yet been properly accessioned by their museum, merely are being
stored there. B.Hickey will return on June 23 to see if they are able to release them
to us for our consideration on their appropriateness for our collection.
i) Marine Museum Storage Building Repairs: Ed Mathews has repaired the roof
with cedar shingles.
j) Lighthouse Photo cell Repairs: Mike Able sent staff to make necessary repairs.
He suspects a lightning strike caused damage. The $440 invoice has been
submitted to Bayham for payment.
k) Oxford Rifles Shoulder patch storage: The chairman reported verbal quotes to
build glass or acrylic storage case for shoulder patches. It was moved by
R.Bradfield and seconded by J.Woon that we build an acrylic cover rather than
glass, and that the chairman be authorized to order one from the lowest price once
more additional quotes have been obtained. Motion Carried.
1) Sandwich Board Enhancements: It was decided that further enhancements to the
sandwich sign are not necessary now that we have the "Open" flag.
m) Edison Museum Painting: Now that the budget is close to approval, Mr. McCord
will be instructed to proceed with painting as previously quoted.

7. NEW BUSINESS:
a) 2011 Budget Reductions: At the request of Bayham council, the
committee examined the draft budget with the purpose of
removing $15,000. Since we budgeted for 7 students and only
received grants for 5, it was moved by J.Woon and seconded by
C.Buchanan that we cut $15,000 from wages & benefits with the
understanding that if we should receive additional grants to hire a
student for the Interpretive Centre, the committee will make
alternate internal adjustments to the budget to make up the
shortfall. Motion Carried.
b) Aylmer Museum Artefact Donation: It was moved by
R.Maddox and seconded by J.Woon that we accept the postcards
of Port Burwell from the Aylmer Museum. Motion Carried.
c) "Open" flag location at Edison Museum: A discussion was
held to decide where to mount the "open" flag. It was suggested
to put it on one of the sign posts by the road side.
d) Carpenter Ant infestation at Lighthouse: C.Buchanan
reported that large black carpenter ants are swarming all over the
cement base of the lighthouse. R. Maddox suggested sprinkling
baking soda on the soil surrounding the lighthouse.
e) Aluminium cart purchase: C.Buchanan reported that he
purchased 2 aluminium carts for $20 each for students to
transport "Open" signs out to the road side.
f) Lifeboat Repairs: It was moved by M.Schafer and seconded by
R.Maddox that the chairman seek estimate from Nathan Dawley
to repair the ridgepole and gunnels of the lifeboat. Motion
Carried.
9. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday July 13, 2011 at 7:00 pm Municipal office.
10. ADJOURNMENT: It was moved by J.Woon and seconded by R.Bradfield that the
meeting be adjourned at 8:20 pm.
