HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/14/2013 - Museums Bayham MUSEUMS BAYHAM Minutes of August 14, 2013 Meeting Bayham Municipal Offices,Straffordville,Ontario Present: Chair- Bev Hickey,Vice-chair-Chuck Buchanan, Ray Maddox,Albert White, Ron Bradfield, Matt Schafer. Regrets: Lynn Acre, Brian Masschaele,Anna Schafer. Absent: Councillor Tom Southwick In the absence of our Secretary,the minutes will be taken by Chuck Buchanan. 1. CALLTO ORDER: Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. 2. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST: None. 3. AGENDA: Moved by Ron Bradfield and seconded by Matt Schafer, that the agenda be approved. Motion carried. 4. MINUTES: Moved by Matt Schafer,seconded by Albert White,that the minutes of the July 11, 2013,meeting,be approved as written. Motion carried. 5. CORRESPONDENCE: Chuck Buchanan Submitted a report and Invitation to join,the Great Lakes Marine History Association. It was reviewed by the members and Ray Maddox took it for further perusal. 6. BUSINESS FROM THE MINUTES: Chuck Buchanan has completed a new MUSEUM OPEN sign for the Marine Museum to replace the previous one which was badly deteriorated. He,also, donated a Dlink Router for use in the museum office.The parging of the wall at the Edison Museum was inspected satisfactorily,and has been paid for. 7. MONTHLY REPORTS: The monthly reports for the month of July for the Edison Museum and the Marine Museum and Lighthouse were reviewed.It was noted that the attendance at the Marine Museum and the Lighthouse,were up about 38 %compared to July 2012. Moved by Ray Maddox and seconded by Ron Bradfield,that both reports be accepted. 8. ALARM CALLS: On two occasions, Chuck Buchanan,and Ron Bradfield,have been called,by the Alarm Company,that the Lighthouse had failed the telephone line test.The problem seems to be the phones in the Marine Museum and the Lighthouse,are not properly hung up at night. They have been giving some trouble, and thought should be given to acquiring new phones for next season. MUSEUMS BAYHAM MINUTES. PAGE 2. 9. NIMROD ANCHOR:The anchor at the Lighthouse has been broken.The original crosspiece has been snapped off at the centre,and needs replacing.Albert White volunteered to explore the available sources and methods of repair,and will report back at the next meeting. 10. GREAT WATERFRONT TRAIL BIKE TOUR: About 200 bikers will be coming through Port Burwell, on Thur.Aug. 15, 2013, and plans to accommodate them are set. Bev Hickey will put up direction signs, first thing in the morning, and Chuck Buchanan and Albert White,will aid the Student Staff, in handling the numbers of bikers, some of whom,will tour the Marine Museum,The Lighthouse, and the Submarine.Another bike tour, from the Aylmer Area,will be coming through, on Saturday,Aug. 17, 2013. 11. EDISON BUILDING COMMITTEE: Matt Schafer submitted the report from a meeting held by this committee, on August 7, 2013. Plans for a new building were reviewed, and, it was suggested that a frame building be erected to house the Edison Museum, rather than a steel building,which was discussed at earlier meetings. A prefabricated concrete main floor, is being considered. The next big question to be answered, is how to organize a fund raising campaign, given all the rules and regulations, that have to be adhered to. It was moved by Matt Schafer, and seconded by Chuck Buchanan,that an invoice from MC Engineering, in the amount of$3,596.81, for the drafting of plans for the proposed museum building, be presented to Council, and recommend payment from the Edison Building Fund. 12. SIGNS:A discussion was held, led by Albert White, on the subject of more visibility for directions to the Edison Museum, and the trimming of the bushes at the base of the sign in front of the Museum. It was recommended that the bushes obstructing the visibility of the Edison Historical Plaque,be trimmed down, as road maintenance. 13. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, September 11, 2013. 14.
