Minutes of May 8, 2013 Meeting
Bayham Municipal Office, Straffordville,Ontario
Present: Chair-Bev Hickey, Vice Chair- Chuck Buchanan, Secretary- Lynn Acre,
Albert White, Matt Schafer
Regrets: Anna Schafer, Brian Masschaele, Ron Bradfield
Absent: Councillor Tom Southwick, Ray Maddox
1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and
thanked A.White for getting the key for tonight's meeting.
2. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST: None
3. AGENDA: It was moved by M.Schafer and seconded by C. Buchanan
that the agenda be approved. Motion Carried.
4. MINUTES: It was moved by L.Acre and seconded by A. White that
the minutes of the April 10, 2013 meeting be approved as written.
Motion Carried.
5. CORRESPONDENCE : None
6. MATTERS OUT OF THE MINUTES
a) Edison Fest Committee: M.Schafer reported that the
subcommittee's May 7 meeting was cancelled and is rescheduled for
May 13 at the V.C.C. at 7:00 pm.
b) 2013 Aylmer Home & Rec Show-April 12, 13 & 14, 2013:
B.Hickey thanked all those who helped set up, tear down and staff the
display. There was lots of interest, mostly about the HMCS Ojibwa.
c) Straffordville Home & Rec Show April 27: B.Hickey set up a
display table.
d) Lighthouse windows: Clera Brantford installed new windows and
did a fine job for a great price. It includes a lifetime warranty on the
double-pained windows. A lip was installed on the flashing to deflect
rain and prevent streaking.

e) New Edison Museum Building Committee: met April 16, 7:00
pm at the Municipal office. Pat Zimmer was the special guest.
J) Wind Interpretive Centre Staffing: The Interpretive Centre
Management committee have partnered with the Erie Shores Wind
Farm to provide free staffing during July & August for weekends and
holidays only.
g) Parging Edison Museum: "Paul's Masonry" (Paul Reimer) have
been given the "go-ahead" to begin the parging. B.Hickey will check
to see if the work has been completed.
h) Marine Artefacts Donated: Photographs of 14 marine-related
artefacts were passed around. Pt. Burwell Historical Society has
purchased these items from a Tillsonburg resident and wishes to
donate them to the Marine Museum. It was moved by A.White and
seconded by M.Schafer that we accept the 14 marine-related artefacts
from Pt.Burwell Historical Society. Motion Carried.
It was moved by M.Schafer and seconded by L.Acre that a letter of
thanks be sent to Ron Bradfield, President of the Pt.Burwell Historical
Society. Motion Carried.
i) Student Interviews: B.Hickey, C.Buchanan & L.Millard
interviewed 8 candidates from which 5 were hired. Three were
returning students and 2 were new hires. Pending government
funding, they will begin May 13.
j) Great Waterfront Trail Adventure: B.Hickey attended the
planning meeting in Pt. Stanley. A group of 150-200 cyclists will pass
through Bayham on Aug.15 on their way from Lakeshore to Turkey
Point with a staggered arrival in Pt.Burwell between 9:30 -11:30 am.
They have requested to tour the Interpretive Centre, Marine Museum,
Lighthouse, Edison Museum and HMCS Ojibwa. Aylmer Express will
cover the event. Volunteers are needed to give tours at both museums
and perhaps Wind Interpretive Centre if Erie Shores cannot provide
staffing during the week.

8. NEW BUISNESS:
a) EON May Meeting: May 2 C.Buchanan attended. The Barn Quilt Project
has been taken over by a provincial-wide group. Soon the Quilt Trail will
stretch across the province.
b) Damage to Marine Museum's Siding: R.Bradfield reported that damage
to the bottom of the Marine Museum's siding appears to have been done by
yard maintenance. B.Hickey will inspect.
c) May 14 Car Rally: Approximately 20 people will attend the Marine
Museum at 10:30 am. C.Buchanan volunteered to do a tour but needs help.
d) Sandi's Walk: A Walkathon to celebrate Elgin County's beauty will
arrive in Vienna on July 4. Participants have requested a tour of Edison
Museum.
e) Elgin County's Business Retention & Expansion Project: Once again
the County of Elgin Economic Development & Tourism Advisory
Committee (CEEDTAC) will interview area businesses. It was moved by
L.Acre and seconded by M.Schafer that if Museums Bayham is requested
for an interview, we should participate. Motion Carried.
f) Toilet at Marine Museum: C.Buchanan checked it and found that it
wasn't functioning. He volunteered to replace the water valve soon. He
advises that when it needs to be replaced, a commercial grade replacement
be purchased.
g) Flags at Marine Museum: R.Bradfield lifted C.Buchanan in his boom
truck and he replaced the pulley on the poles. All four flags are now flying.
h) Donation of Horsehair Couch: A west Elgin donor has offered us a
horsehair couch. If it's still available, B.Hickey will pick up. If it does not
meet our mandate, we may need to find new home for it.
9. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday June 12, 2013, at 7:00 pm Municipal
office.
10. ADJOURNMENT It was moved by L.Acre that the meeting be
adjourned at 8:08 pm.
