Minutes of September 10, 2014 Meeting
Bayham Municipal Office, Straffordville,Ontario
Present: Chair-Bev Hickey, Vice Chair- Chuck Buchanan, Anna Schafer, Matt Schafer,
Albert White, Susan Start.
Regrets: Secretary Lynn Acre, Ron Bradfield, Ray Maddox, Brian Masschaele,
Councillor Tom Southwick.
1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm
2. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST: None.
3. AGENDA: It was moved by Susan Start and seconded by A. White,
that the agenda be approved as amended. Motion Carried.
4. SECRETARY: It was moved by Matt Schafer, seconded by A. White,
that C. Buchanan be appointed acting Secretary. Motion carried.
5. MINUTES: It was moved by Matt Schafer, seconded by A. White
that the minutes of the August 13, 2014 Museums Bayham Committee
meeting be approved as written. Motion carried.
6. CORRESPONDENCE: None
7. STUDENT REPORTS: The End-of Season Student Reports for The
Edison, Marine Museum, and Lighthouse, were reviewed. It was noted
that attendance at all locations was up from last year, and substantially up
at the Marine Museum and Lighthouse. It was moved by A. White,
seconded by S. Start, that the Student Reports be received as written.
Motion carried.
8. WHEELHOUSE SUB-COMMITTEE: This Committee,
consisting of Bev Hickey, Ron Bradfield, Albert White, and Chuck
Buchanan, travelled to Stromness, near Port Maitland, Ontario, to view
and examine the wheelhouse from the ship, FERNGLEN on Thursday,
August 14, 2014, to determine the feasibility of adding this important
artefact to The Port Burwell Marine Museum collection. It is now, and has
been, for several years, being used as an office for G. Barnes & Sons
Construction Company, and standing at ground level. They have offered
to sell this wheelhouse, to be used at our Museum as an attraction, for the

sum of$ 5,000.00 plus a tax receipt and some donor's recognition. The
major challenge would be to get it transported to Port Burwell. Concept
plans have been drawn by Barry Wade, on how to effectively set it up as
an attention-getting and attractive display. Thanks for his efforts, are
gratefully extended. There are many more details to be gathered and
worked on, and as soon as possible, the Wheelhouse Sub-committee will
present this project to Bayham Council.
9. MUSEUM PARKING SIGNS: Although the Works Department is
looking into this request, no information has been submitted.
10. NEW "OPEN" FLAGS, 2015: This will be addressed before opening
the new season in 2015.
11. LIFEBOAT PAINTING: Quotes will be obtained by Bev Hickey and
submitted to the Committee.
12. DOORS OPEN: Doors Open will not be held at locations in Bayham
as it is Municipal Election time.
13. EON REPORT: C. Buchanan attended the September meeting of the
Elgin Oxford Norfolk Curators and Directors Association, of which The
Municipality of Bayham is a member and reported the following: This
meeting was held at The Gaylea Dairy Heritage Museum. A number of
member services were discussed including various workshops to enhance
presentations and manage collections at member sites. Notices will be sent
to all members.
14. LIGHTHOUSE SIDING: It was noticed by Ron Bradfield and further
examined by C. Buchanan, and reported, that there are a few spots on the
Lighthouse, where the vinyl siding has separated, somewhat, and should be
attended to. As there is a long-term warranty on this coating, C. Buchanan
has attempted to contact the principal of the application company, but has
not heard anything back. This needs to be followed up.
15. H.M.C.S. OJIBWA CELEBRATION: It was discussed, to open the
Marine Museum and Lighthouse on Saturday, September 27, 2014, subject
to the availability of volunteers, as an adjunct to the Ojibwa celebration of
100 years of the Submarine Service.

16. EDISON BUILDING COMMITTEE: Matt Schafer reported that he
has made a presentation to Bayham Council, regarding funding for a new
Edison Museum. He stated that there is approximately $70,000.00 in the
building fund, along with a valuation of$52,000.00, for the building lot for
the new museum, and requested that proceeds from the sale of the present
Edison Museum facility, be applied to the building of a new one, along with
applications for any grants that may become available, under the
celebrations of 150 years since Confederation.
Council received this presentation favourably.
17. ARTEFACT LOAN: A request to approve lending the church pew
from the Edison Museum to the Aylmer Museum until December, 2014, was
received by e-mail via Lynda Millard and approved. Moved by Susan Start,
seconded by Anna Schafer, that this loan be granted. Motion carried.
18. BUTTERFLY FLOWERBED: Regarding the butterfly garden to be
placed on the Marine Museum boulevarde, it is undertaken to maintain this
bed by the Polestar Group, The Horticultural Society and monitored by the
Museums Bayham volunteers.
ADJOURNMENT: Moved by Matt Schafer, to adjourn the meeting at
9: 07 p.m.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held in the Municipal Offices
in Straffordville, on October 8, 2014, at 7:00 p.m.
