HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/08/2014 - Museums Bayham MUSEUMS BAYHAM Minutes of January 8, 2014 Meeting Bayham Municipal Office, Straffordville, Ontario Present: Chair-Bev Hickey, Vice Chair- Chuck Buchanan, Secretary- Lynn Acre, Matt & Anna Schafer, Albert White. Ron Bradfield, Susan Start (guest). Regrets: Brian Masschaele, Ray Maddox Absent: Councillor Tom Southwick 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm 2. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST: None 3. AGENDA: It was moved by M.Schafer and seconded by A.White that the agenda be approved as presented. Motion Carried. 4. MINUTES: It was moved by L.Acre and seconded by R.Bradfield that the minutes of the December 11, 2013 meeting be approved as written. Motion Carried. 5. CORRESPONDENCE: 6. MATTERS OUT OF THE MINUTES a) Anchor Repairs: Mr. Eicher has repaired the anchor as per our request not to cut the rings. R.Bradfield has picked up the anchor and is storing it in his shop. R.Bradfield suggested that local press be contacted regarding an interview & photo op when the anchor gets placed back on its base. It was noted that the base requires some modifications to adapt to the repairs. B.Hickey, C.Buchanan, A.White & R.Bradfield volunteered to reset the anchor and modify the base. The original piece of wood stock from the Nimrod Schooner's anchor (1800s), which was replaced, has been returned and members will give some thought as to its future. Display it? b) Furnace Repairs: C.Buchanan reported that he made some initial repairs which only lasted a half day therefore he purchased a new draft inducement blower for $237 . He and A.White installed it and the furnace now works fine. The committee thanked them both for their efforts. c) Committee Vacancies: The committee welcomed guest Susan Start and looks forward to her joining this committee. MUSEUMS BAYHAM January 8,2014 -2- d) Edison Fest 2014: A meeting is planned for January 21, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Vienna Community Centre to plan for Edison Fest, which is scheduled for Saturday June 7, 2014. It was noted that Randy Breyer plans to hire a Celtic band for the weekend and has offered to partner with the committee so the band could also perform in the park pavilion during Edison Fest. e) Edison Night Wrap Up: A written report was submitted by L.Millard. The net profits for the fundraiser were $4,268.14. Our next Edison Night will be on Saturday November 15, 2014. e) Home & Garden Shows: Guest Susan Start reported that the London Boat, Fishing & Outdoor Leisure Show will be held on February 21-23, 2014 at the Western Fairgrounds. She investigated the venue on our behalf and secured a discounted rate of$250 plus hst. It was moved by R.Bradfield and seconded by C.Buchanan that we participate in the 2014 London Boat, Fish & Outdoor Leisure Show on Feb.21-23, 2014 at the Western Fairgrounds in London, Ontario by renting a 10' X 10' booth for $250 plus hst. Motion Carried. It was also agreed that we will partner with Elgin County Museum in the St.Thomas Home & Garden Show @ the Timkin Centre with no cost to us. 6. NEW BUSINESS: A) Election of Officers for 2014: It was moved by C.Buchanan and seconded by R.Bradfield that Bev Hickey be nominated for the position of Chairman. Motion Carried. It was moved by L.Acre and seconded by M.Schafer that nominations for Chairman be closed. Motion Carried. Bev Hickey accepted the nomination and was acclaimed as Chairman for 2014. It was moved by M.Schafer and seconded by A.White that Chuck Buchanan be nominated for the position of Vice —Chairman. Motion Carried. It was moved by L.Acre and seconded by M.Schafer that nominations for the position of Vice-Chairman be closed. Motion Carried. Chuck Buchanan accepted the nomination and was acclaimed as Vice- Chairman for 2014. It was moved by R.Bradfield and seconded by M.Schafer that Lynn Acre be nominated for the position of Secretary. Motion Carried. MUSEUMS BAYHAM January 8,2014 -3- It was moved by C.Buchanan and seconded y A.White that nominations for the position of Secretary be closed. Motion Carried. Lynn Acre accepted the nomination and was acclaimed as Secretary for 2014. B) Replacement of Flags: It was noted that flags at both museums need replacing. B.Hickey will ask Joe Preston's office for 3 Canadian flags. He will ask M. Underhill, Deputy-Clerk if the municipality can order 1 American flag and 1 Union Jack. C) Request from Randy Breyer: The owner of Bayham's Family Table, a restaurant in Vienna, wants to display a picture of the original Edison homestead in the restaurant. He asked if he could scan our copy. Members questioned the safety of scanning old photos as the light may cause damage. It was decided to seek advice from archivist Brian Masschaele and also ask if the Elgin Archives have a digital copy of the Edison Homestead that might be printed off. If not, S.Start suggested that taking a photograph of the original photo, while still in the frame, should produce fair results without threatening the original. D) Disposal of fluorescent light tubes: Some time ago, Hydro One removed all of the protective plastic covers on the lights when they replaced all the fluorescent lights in the Marine Museum. Members questioned whether or not protective covers are now needed and also how to dispose of the 8 foot fluorescent replacement bulbs we have in storage. It was suggested that Oxford County Recycle would take them. 9. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday February 12, 2014, at 7:00 pm Municipal office. 10.
