HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/20/2012 - Museums Bayham MUSEUMS BAYHAM Minutes of June 20, 2012 Meeting Bayham Municipal Office, Straffordville, Ontario Present: Chair-Bev Hickey, Vice Chair- Chuck Buchanan, Secretary- Lynn Acre, Ray Maddox, Brian Masschaele, Jean Woon, Anna Schafer, Matt Schafer, Lynda Millard- Clerk, Harris Teall-New Edison Museum Building Committee. Regrets: Ron Bradfield Absent: Councillor Tom Southwick 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm 2. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST: None Confidential Discussion Regarding Acquisition of Property in Vienna A written report was submitted by Jean Woon, Chairman of the new Edison Museum Building Committee. Most committee members contributed to the discussion regarding costs of erecting a new building versus the cost of purchasing Songbirds and renovating it to meet museum standards. The committee acknowledged that further major investment into the current property on Snow Street was neither desirable nor necessary at this time. It was moved by J.Woon and seconded by R.Maddox: Be it resolved that Museums Bayham committee does not deem the property known as Songbirds to be a suitable facility for Museum activity: And be it resolved that Museums Bayham recommends to Bayham Council not to pursue the purchase of Songbirds_for this purpose; And be it resolved that the construction of a new facility is the preferred option for any future relocation of the Edison Museum: And that the value of the current building and property should put towards the expense of a new construction; And that such new construction shall serve as a stable storage facility costing S215,493.00 with future improvements and upgrades to become a fully functional museum funded through committee fundraising efforts. Motion Carried Unanimously 3. AGENDA: It was moved by J. Woon and seconded by B. Masschaele that the agenda be approved with additions. Motion Carried. MINUTES: It was moved by L.Acre and seconded by J. Woon that the minutes of the May 9, 2012 meeting be approved as written. Motion Carried. 5. CORRESPONDENCE: 6. MATTERS OUT OF THE MINUTES a) Summer Students: Our original student supervisor left us for another employment opportunity. Julianne was appointed to her supervisory role. b) Ed Mathews'Bathtub Artifact: B.Hickey took the artefact to Donny Albright, who advises that it is too rotten to repair. It was noted that we have documentation and photos of Ed's historic trip across Lake Erie in the bathtub at the museum. Since Ed does not want it, it was moved by M.Schafer and seconded by J.Woon that we dispose of the bathtub artefact by taking it to a local scrap yard for recycling. Motion Carried. c) Drainage at Edison Museum: Regarding Bayham Council's request that we take steps to lower the grade on the south and north sides of the Edison Museum, PW Dept will be asked to undertake this work. d) Amish Barn Quilt Project: The Edison Museum will host a barn quilt entitled "Illumination" and the Marine Museum will host one entitled "Schooner". 8. REPORTS: a) Edison Museum: Restoration of Bench: A church pew bench, located on the front porch of the Edison Museum needs some reinforcement. C.Buchanan will examine it and attempt to make the repairs himself. Damage to Property by Local Youth: It was noted that neighbouring children have been playing on the museum porch after hours and have damaged the bench aforementioned. Also they have been damaging the lattice work in the gazebo and leaving their toys about the property. It was decided to have the summer students create and post signage stating; "Access to This Property During Museum Hours Only" Broken Blinds: The chairman agreed to purchase two sets of new blinds to replace the broken ones in the Bayham Room and the Lady's Parlour. MUSEUMS BAYHAM June 20, 2012 -4- It was moved by J.Woon and seconded by B.Masschaele that both the Marine Museum & Lighthouse and the Edison Museum monthly reports be accepted as presented. Motion Carried. 8. NEW BUISNESS: a) July 12 Car Rally Tour: 70 people from Ingersoll will visit museums, the lighthouse and the Wind Interpretive Centre on July 12. J.Woon, B.Hickey, C.Buchanan and the students will conduct the tours. b) Elgin Heritage Guide Meeting: We are invited to participate in the creation of a guide book to be printed by Sept.17 and distributed during Doors Open events 2012. B.Masschaele and L.Millard plan to attend. c) July 18 Edison Tour: J.Woon and B.Hickey volunteered to assist the students with this tour. d) Southwest Barn Quilts Trail: An insert included with the London Free Press gave a very good promotion of this tourism strategy. C.Buchanan reported that 5 more "quilts" are ready to be painted. Promotional booklets are available at our libraries and the municipal office. e) Tillsonburg News Article: B.Hickey was interviewed recently regarding both of our museums as well as Project Ojibwa. 9. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday July 25, 2012 at 7:00 pm Municipal office. There will be no August Meeting. The September meeting will be held on Wednesday September 12, 2012 at 7:00 pm at the Edison Museum. *Jean Woon will take the minutes at the July meeting. 10.
