Minutes of November 11, 2015 Meeting
Bayham Municipal Office, Straffordville,Ontario
Present: Chair-Bev Hickey, Vice Chair- Chuck Buchanan, Secretary- Lynn Acre,
Matt Schafer, Susan Start, Albert White, Ron Bradfield, Kimberly Legg, Ray Maddox.
CALL TO ORDER: Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm
1. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST: None
2. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Chairman Bev noted that the annual Port Burwell Santa Claus
parade will be held on Saturday December 6, 2015 at 6 pm. Cookies &hot drinks will be
provided free of charge to those visiting the Lighthouse Keeper's house after the parade.
3. MINUTES: It was moved by L.Acre and seconded by R.Bradfield that the
minutes of the October 14, 2015 meeting be approved. Motion Carried.
4. CORRESPONDENCE: none
5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
a) New Committee Members: B.Hickey met with CAO Shipway to discuss
the possibility of Ally Shelley joining our group. Although originally from
Port Burwell, and working part time for HMCS Ojibwa, Ally has recently
moved to St.Thomas. Council has her application and will decide whether or
not to appoint her to this committee. Also, P.Shipway confirmed that
municipal staff are allowed to become full voting members of this
committee. Therefore Lynda Millard could apply for membership. There
was a lively discussion regarding the best representation of membership on
this committee. Younger members as well as representation from the low-
German community would be desirable. If possible all 3 wards should be
represented.
b) Changing Road Signs: P.Shipway has advised that directional signs for
the Edison Museum and the Wind Interpretive Centre will be dealt with
(removed) by Bayham staff.
c) Presentation to Beach Canal Lighthouse Group: C.Buchanan
prepared a slideshow presentation on the history of our lighthouse and lens
collection. He and B.Hickey traveled to Burlington on Nov.8 where they
spoke to a group of 14 from the Beach Canal Lighthouse Group. They gave
a $50 honorarium to Museums Bayham in thanks.

5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS (continued):
d) Lifeboat Cover: B.Hickey and C.Buchanan secured the new tarp
to the lifeboat with strong bungee cords.
6. NEW BUSINESS:
a) Letter of Support for Canada 150 Funding: The County of Elgin is
applying for a grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage to celebrate
the 150th Anniversary of Confederation. They are planning 5 different
activities. Firstly they plan to provide new signage for farms that are 100
years old and buildings that are at least 150 years old. Secondly they plan to
erect directional signage for National Historic Sites and thirdly to develop a
joint exhibition in 2017 with the theme "Transportation" using artefacts
from all Elgin museums. Fourthly they plan to digitize Confederation-era
documents and develop a virtual exhibit pertaining to Elgin's role in
Confederation. Fifthly they plan to hire a contract co-ordinator to lead the
marketing of these afore mentioned events. It was moved by M.Schafer and
seconded by R.Maddox that Museums Bayham supports the County of
Elgin's application for funding from the Canada 150 Fund. Motion Carried.
We will request municipal staff to prepare a letter of support on official
Municipal letterhead and submit to Brian Masschaele, Director of
Community and Cultural Services.
b) Private Tour of Marine Museum & Lighthouse: B.Hickey and
C.Buchanan volunteered to supervise a tour of"home-schooled" students
and their parents on Friday November 13, 2015.
7. FINANCES (Budget):
Committee members respectfully request to be informed when Council
plans to discuss the Museums Bayham budget so that they may plan to
attend.

8. OTHER BUSINESS:
a) Update on Legal Proceedings: M.Schafer reported that he recently met
with CAO Shipway to seek an update on the legal proceedings pertaining to
the sale of the Edison Museum property. Lawyers are investigating and we
should have some answers by the December meeting.
b) Chairman Appointment: Chairman Hickey will be unable to attend
the December and January meetings therefore Vice-Chairman Buchanan
will chair those meetings.
c) New Secretary Needed: L.Acre reminded members of her intention to
resign her membership from this committee at the end of this year. A
replacement secretary will be needed in January.
9. NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at 7:00 pm at the
Municipal office.
10. ADJOURNMENT: It was Moved by R.Bradfield that the meeting be
adjourned at 7:55 pm.

will be absent for the December and January meetings. Vice-Chairman
