The question for the Museums Bayham Board is what, if any, of that literature is relevant to the collection of the Edison family Canadian connection that is the focus of the Edison Museum in Vienna. The Lamb offer of 11 books on these topics comes to the Board at a time when the status of the Edison Museum and its property is under consideration as part of a facilities review by Bayham Council, and the collection essentially closed to public and Board access. An email exchange among Board members regarding this particular offer has indicated a split view, with some members enthusiastic about their relevance and others opposed on the grounds that that relevance is tenuous and the information in them, for the purposes of our museum, readily available online. The location and background of the donor is not known at this time. Below is brief data of varying length from Amazon for each title. .1. From tinfoil to stereo: the acoustic years of the recording industry, 1877-1928. Walter L. Welch. 1959. $36. The fundamental reference book of sound recording history, last available in print in the late 1970s. It described the development of sound recording from early experiments that led to the invention of the tinfoil cylinder phonograph by Thomas Alva Edison in 1877 to the development of stereo technology in the mid-1950s. This book is a revision and expansion of the first half of the earlier text--the critical acoustic era of phonograph history. It incorporates 50 percent new information presented by international experts, including some who were associated with historical figures in the industry or who have hands-on experience with actual models of early phonographs. The new material includes discussion of the talking doll, the Kinetophone, the cement phonograph era, early coin-vending machines, and the international scope of early entrepreneurs. Since its first publication in 1959,From Tinfoil to Stereo has been regarded as the bible of record and phonograph collectors. It investigates the individuals, the companies, and the legal machinations that led to virtually every major development in the talking machine industry, up to the installation of sound on Hollywood stages and in movie theaters across the country. This edition contains many new photographs, most taken between 1888 and 1912, that have never appeared in any publication. Walter L. Welch was curator and director of the Diane and Arthur B. Belfer Audio Laboratory and Archive and of its forerunner, the Thomas A. Edison Rerecording Laboratory, at Syracuse University. Leah Brodbeck Stenzel Burt, is the retired curator of the Edison National Historic Site, West Orange,New Jersey. 2. The phonograph and how to use it. National Phonograph Company. 1923. 2012 and 2015 reprints $10-24. 3. Edison at work: the Thomas A. Edison laboratory at West Orange,New Jersey. (Famous Museums Series.)David W. Hutchings. 1969. 94 pages. $5. 4. A voice in time: the gramaphone of Fred Gaisberg, 1873-1951. Jerrold Northrop Moore. 1976. Used copies $7-100. Fred Gaisberg was one of the very first performers as well as PR, Recording Manager and A &R manager to grace the recording studio. Jerrold Northrop Moore weavers an excellent storyline in discussing Gaisberg's gifts to the phonograph. Recording sessions with Caruso, Patti and others make for interesting reading. The photos add much to the commentary. This reference text traces Gaisberg from the early 1890's to his important management with HMV and later EMI in England. Several of the historic recording sessions "on location" in Wales (Patti), Caruso (Milan), Sistine Chapel Choir and soloists (Rome)truly makes this book a walk down memory lane. Well-written this book is a must for any library of a classical record collector or classical music researcher. 5. Thomas Edison, chemist. Byron M Vanderbilt. 1971. 373 p. Textbook. Used copies $10-$80. 6. Immortals of engineering: Thomas Edison, American inventor . Roselyn and Ray Eldon Hiebert . No info on Amazon. 1969. 214 pages.
