The position of curator and the amalgamated museum board are part of a new direction for the Municipality of Bayham, as described in the Bayham Cultural Plan, completed in 2005. Sandy Graham has joined the Municipality as Curator of Bayham Museums, which include Port Burwell Marine Museum & Historic Lighthouse, and Edison Museum in Vienna. Mr. Graham started his duties on May 4th. As well as promoting the history of the area, he believes that heritage operations can improve not only tourism, but also economic and community development. He also see ties between historical and natural heritage. "I didn't always find history fascinating" he says. `But as a naturalist with some background in biology, I kept finding these connections between the natural and human world, such as the strong influence of nature, or geography, on human settlement. Now we're doing a lot of the influencing. But there is a kind of Karma about that, isn't there", says the new Curator, who graduated from Seneca College in 1983 in Museum & Park Studies. "These are things I am compelled to explore, and I find visitors of all ages are just as intrigued about these relationships. You see, it is these "big pictures" that help put the artifacts, and those wonderful, dusty old documents into a context, a narrative; one that ends in ourselves. And that raises questions, about technology, society, and values. What I love about museums is that people, including children, can discover that you don't have to be a historian to think in these directions, to explore these paths of thought but also feeling." While excited about history, Mr. Graham acknowledges that heritage agencies must be forward looking if they are to survive. "We need to not only improve our standards, but to link arms with other parts of our community and region in planning and communicating our message. To make every dollar count, we have to get better at what we do. To some extent, we have to help ourselves first. And that means taking a long look at what we do and where we could improve." Born and raised in London, Mr. Graham has worked in museum management and education for twenty-five years. He has been Curator of Ottawa House -by -the -Sea in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, the West Parry Sound District Museum, as well as the Clarke Museum & Archives near Bowmanville, and the Port Dover Harbour Museum in 2000. He also worked as a blacksmith at Black Creek Pioneer Village, and taught outdoor education for the Toronto District School Board. He most recently lived in Wingham, Ontario, working as a planner with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. The Edison Museum displays many artifacts pertaining to the local Edison family and inventor Thomas Edison, who visited here often in his youth. These include furnishings and art, and also a variety of Edison's many inventions. The Port Burwell Marine Museum has one of the finest collections of lighthouse lenses on the Great Lakes, and many other marine artifacts. Close by is the historic Port Burwell Lighthouse, built in 1840, one of Canada's oldest wooden lighthouses, which stands twenty meters high. Visitors can still climb the stairs to the top, and look out over the lake. PRESS RELEASE Bayham has a new Curator 112 Mr. Graham feels that Bayham Museums have a promising future ahead of them. "I came here because Edison Museum and the Port Burwell Marine Museum have strong collections and important, compelling stories, and there's not a big city in sight!" exclaims the Curator, who plans to explore the area with some hiking, cycling, swimming and birdwatching in his spare time. "The Bayham Cultural Plan, completed last year, describes how we can attract visitors who value the rural character and natural blessings that are the strengths of this area. That is the kind of marketing, the kind of vision, I can get excited about. Promoting, enjoying and sharing our natural and human heritage while retaining our identity." But Mr. Graham also acknowledges that it won't be easy. "Federal funds have been sadly out of touch with the increase in museums, their operations, and their budgets, which have grown over the past thirty years. Despite a consistent demonstration of need to not only buttress programs and services, but also to maintain, and in many cases repair, aging museum and archival buildings and facilities, federal funds remain at levels befitting a fringe service, not an important and endangered cultural resource. You could make a strong argument that without the volunteers, these two museums wouldn't be here". He also praises other contributions. "I have to give credit to the Municipality of Bayham for taking the initiative of developing the Cultural Plan. No plan is perfect, but it's a good start for guiding the discussion and planning of how we want to shape our future. And the new Bayham Museums Board will help guide the museums towards professional museum standards, towards the future, and the idea of the museums being a cornerstone of the community." The new Curator asks: "Is it so hard to see that cultural and heritage resources are also an economic resource? The people who live here understand this. And many municipalities, which often struggle to balance budgets - stressed by federal and provincial off-loading - maintain their commitment to culture, heritage and the arts through thick and thin. Why? Because these enlightened councils recognize that these activities are part of what makes a thriving, more interesting and attractive community, to visitors, residents and businesses. You don't need to be an economist to see the dividends, to see that investing in heritage makes a more prosperous community." It is this "big picture" that Mr. Graham will also keep an eye on, as he works with the Bayham Municipality, the volunteers, and other partners to develop Edison Museum and the Port Burwell Marine Museum & Historic Lighthouse. "We have to remember", he points out, "we're all in this together. We need each other if we're going to move forward. We just have to agree on where "forward" is and how to get there. The Cultural Plan is a big step in that direction, but we'll still need to listen to each other, and that includes our youth. After all, that's who we're passing our heritage on to." FUNDING MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH AN ONTARIO TRILLIUM FUNDATION GRANT SECURED BY THE BAYHAM CULTURE COMMITTEE. For more information, phone 519-866-5521.
