(a) CAO 44-19 - Port Burwell Lighthouse Report — Motion to receive for information
Albert White has found the manufacturer of Liquid Vinyl Siding. A photo of the Lighthouse is
on the business's website. Albert made contact with the business and the opinion is that the
wood is raw at the back; a moisture barrier is required for the siding to seal properly. The
moisture should be less than 14% and the inside sealed with an oil-based sealer.
Contact can be made with the company if required when reviewing next year.

Curator's Report August 2019
Collections
The artifacts for Queen's Park exhibit were mustered, prepared and cleaned, and after an exhibit mock-up, were
packed.
The storage area has been organized with smaller items packed in the clear plastic moving boxes from the main
office. The number of artifacts that have been found in this thorough reorganization, both accessioned and
unaccessioned, has become a small collection unto itself and will be dealt with in time.
Some of these items require further research, such as the photograph of an unknown serviceman. I checked with
Ian Raven and as with the pith helmet, he will inquire with his researchers.
Another item was a photo album donated in 1988 by a Scout Unit from Burwell England. I googled the unit and
contacted a person through FaceBook. She will get back to me after her holiday and I am hoping to learn more
about this group and the story behind why they gave the museum a photo album.
Exhibits and Events
On the 8th the exhibit on fishing in Port Burwell was installed at Queen's Park. I took two of our students, Tysha and
Nathan. Once done, we photographed it, and took the tour of the Parliamentary building. We have since received
the official photograph, and Jeff Yurek posted it on the FaceBook page of the Elgin Oxford Norfolk Association of
Curators, Archivists, and Directors. I reposted it on the Burwell Life FaceBook page where it received over 40 likes.
I added some fishing photographs to the fishing exhibit and a sign to explain the missing large photo that has been
taken to the Queen's Park exhibit.
The children's programs finished off this month. The first week of August had only 4 attend, but the final week had
8. The partnership with the Library continues to be beneficial to our attendance numbers.
There were a couple of concerns voiced by visitors on safety issues. One was in the lighthouse regarding a window,
and Paul took action on that. Another was about the lenses and their location on the floor. I shifted one lens
slightly to increase the passage space, but determined the concern about being a possible tipping hazard was next
to impossible. I also reduced the wobbliness of a large light in response to that visitor's comment.
A large tour group is coming Sept. 111h from the U.S. Lighthouse Society and I have prepared an information flyer
to add to existing flyers. These will be in a small gift bag along with a Canada Day flag pin.
I have begun to work on the exhibit topic for next summer, Beach Life in Port Burwell, by researching in our files
and looking through the on-line database collections of Elgin County museums for artifacts to bolster ours.
Staff
The students have gone back to university. Their accomplishments this summer include: the never ending
accessioning; the many little projects, such as the storage area, completing another scavenger hunt sheet, special
event crafts, leading a staff meeting, assisting with our tour groups and opening vQnt; and interacting with visitors
every day in a friendly and professional manner.
I received a tutorial from Nathan on how to handle the various forms related to admissions and reports as he had
updated them from last year to make them function more efficiently.
The garden has established itself well but could use some mulch to keep the weeds down.

Year End Report
2019 Season
Index:
I. Fundraisers & Social Events Overview
II. Artifact Donations & Catalogue Report
III. Other Museum Accomplishments
IV. Visitors and Admissions
V. Considerations for 2020
I. Fundraisers & Social Events Overview:
1. Canada Day:
- Canada Day brought many people out to the parade, lighthouse and the
museum. Children's activities were outside the Museum and the table of
Canada Day give-aways was popular.
2. Beach Fest: Beachfest this year was revamped to be in in conjunction with the
commercial businesses along Robinson Street. We didn't see very many children
at our craft table but did offer a craft both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
3. 3 -Port Bike Tour:
- The 3 -Port Bike Tour, while popular, did not bring in more visitors at the
museum and only slightly increased visitor numbers to the lighthouse.
II. Artifact Donations & Cataloguing Report
1. Donations
- Several new artifacts were brought in this year Pith Helmut, Plank from Plank
Road
2. Donations to be Completed
- Items of interest were located and accessioned in the back storage area and
some were put on display in various museum locations i.e boat motor display
3. Electronic Database
- Items continue to be placed in the card cabinet and added to the database with
photographs
Other Museum Accomplishments
1. Children's Program
- This year the children's program was again in conjunction with the Port Burwell
Public Library. This helped to both spread word about the program as well as to
entice more parents to bring their children as the program was now two hours long.
The visitor numbers greatly exceeded the previous year with eleven children at the
peak. The program, unlike last year, was different each day with a variety of crafts
ranging from making a turtle habitat, kites, glitter bomb, and doing scavenger
hunts.
IV. Visitors 2019
1. Visitor Summary
Lighthouse Summary
Visitors:
2018 987 2454
Marine Museum Summary
Visitors:
2018 291 933
2. Admissions
Museums Admissions Account as of September 5/19 TOTAL $5585.80
Annual Budget $5000.00
V. Considerations for 2020:
Cataloguing
- The cataloguing project is very close to being complete; few items remain in
the storage area as well as a few items on the general floor that still need to be
accessioned.
Children's Program
- Continue to collaborate with the Library to run consecutive programs
