A. Port Burwell Historical Society re Wheelhouse Project official sod-breaking
Port Burwell Historical Society
May 1, 2018.
Dear Mayor Ens and Members of Council,
On behalf of the Port Burwell Historical Society, we would like to thank Council and Senior Staff most
sincerely for your support and assistance with our Wheelhouse project, which have been instrumental in
bringing us to this exciting point. We greatly appreciate your patience and confidence in us over the
past four years as we navigated the regulatory processes and municipal due-diligence required in an
undertaking of this scope.
We hope you can join us at the Port Burwell Marine Museum on Thursday, May 10th at 1:30 p.m.for an
official sod-breaking at the Wheelhouse foundation pad.
You will have a very special opportunity to meet and chat with the last Captain to command the
Wheelhouse on the Judith M. Pierson/Fernglen. Captain Richard Metz is coming to donate to us the
brass pilot-house fixtures he saved when the ship was decommissioned, including its clock, barometer,
blowtube and whistle blower-a remarkable gesture, and a red-letter day for our community.
Captain Metz spent 30 years as a Great Lakes Freighter Captain aboard Canadian and American ships. In
his retirement, he has authored books about his adventures, full of incredible stories of wild weather,
close calls and colourful personalities. He divides his time between homes in Michigan and Florida, and
is a regular contributor to boatnerd.com. We are deeply honoured by his support of our Wheelhouse
project, and know you will be as excited as we are to spend an afternoon with him in Port Burwell.
In the days following May 10th,the Wheelhouse will make its final trek, up from the harbour to its
permanent home as the feature outdoor artifact at the Marine Museum - in time for the 2018 visitor
season. We can't wait to move forward with its final onsite refurbishment and greatly appreciate your
continued support. Please stop in often!
Yours sincerely,
Ron Bradfield, Chuck Buchanan, Susan Start, Barry Wade, Albert White
