Exhibits and Events
Last December I applied for the Marine Museum to participate in the Community Exhibits Program at
the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for the March-July 2017 session. In January, Margaret received an
email stating the application was successful. During the week of the 13th-17th in March, Margaret and I
will install an exhibit on shipwrecks in Lake Erie. I have written a report for Council and it is attached. I
will be taking a few artifacts for this exhibit, and they are currently out of their usual place, in case you
are in the museum and wondering why they are near the door.
The museums of Elgin County are embarking on a county-wide exhibit theme of transportation, with a
passport for visitors to get stamped at each museum site and a prize at the end of the season for a
winner. The MM will be part of this and taking advantage of the group advertising through Elgin
Tourism. The MM exhibit title is"Roads, Rails, and Water" and will use photographs, artifacts and text to
tell how these modes of transportation were linked, making Port Burwell a transportation centre. This
exhibit will be placed in the new seasonal exhibit location, which will be where the fishing display is,
right behind the front desk. The fishing display will be relocated.
I am currently preparing a potential event for a car club to be held August 12th.The event is called
"Driving The Plank Road" and would start around 9-10 am in Ingersoll at the two museums there.
Participants would receive a map of the road with sites of interest and proceed to drive along the Plank
Road, making various stops along the way, and ending in Port Burwell in the afternoon. I have been
contacting possible sites and already have received interest in being part of this event. The Edison
Museum display in Vienna will be a stop, along with its transportation exhibit on driving the Plank Road
in Elgin County. Once in Port Burwell, participants will be offered the opportunity to tour the sub at a
discounted price and to tour the Marine Museum. Restaurants will be contacted to see if they would
make special offers to the participants. I would like to have a nice map printed up so that may be the
only expense. This event will be open only to the car club, but we can use the route another time.
Collections
The Edison Museum is currently packed and ready to move. All artifacts and items are listed, either on
the main list, the restaurant display list, or out on loan. The museum has been able to loan a number of
artifacts to the Oxford County Museum School and the Ingersoll Cheese and Agricultural Museum for
upcoming events relating to WWI.This helps keep the Edison collection visible to the public.
The Marine Museum will be getting a makeover in the storage area that will hopefully allow more items
to be stored and to make that space function better. As noted above,a seasonal exhibit area will be
arranged, allowing for a yearly theme to provide a fresh look to the museum.
Staff
I am pleased to be able to continue working for the museums in 2017.Although my time with the Edison
collection is nearing an end, it has been enjoyable to see all the artifacts. I am looking forward to the
exciting activities coming up for the Marine Museum.
Students will soon be applying for summer work and I will be developing with Margaret a plan of action
so as to take advantage of the skills they will bring, and those they wish to develop, to make some
positive changes in the museum. As usual, the students will attend the EON student orientation, which
will teach them accessioning, exhibit techniques, and customer service skills.

ADVISORY BOARD &
COMMITTEE MEMO
4uPpoj.t 119. 143**unity
DATE: February 2, 2017
TO: Municipality of Bayham Members of Council
The Port Burwell Marine Museum is pleased to announce its successful application to the
Ontario Legislature's Community Exhibit Program.
Twice a year the Community Exhibit Program offers Ontario's museums and community
organizations the opportunity to apply for one of the 10 exhibit cases so that they may promote
their institution. This year, unlike other years, there is a theme - Canada's 150th Anniversary.
With that in mind, the Port Burwell Marine Museum's proposal was to look at the history of
shipwrecks in Lake Erie, beginning in the 1850's. Some of the artifacts to be displayed would be
some shipwreck wood, a few navigational devices, such as a binnacle, and photos of ships, the
harbor, and the lighthouse from many years ago. We were thrilled when we were informed our
proposal was approved.
What this means for the Marine Museum is the opportunity to prepare a display and have the
interpretive text translated into French, then professionally printed up for us to keep afterwards.
Once installed by Margaret and myself, the exhibit will be visited by all visitors and school
groups that come to the Legislative building. We are ensured to have good visibility as at the
end of the exhibit hallway are the washrooms. Security is strict, with access carefully monitored.
There is a security guard at the end of the hallway at all times and the exhibit case is locked.
This opportunity for publicity continues, as the MPP for each institution is encouraged to drop by
during installation for a photo op. The Legislative photographer takes a shot and sends a matted
photograph commemorating the event. The exhibit will be up from late March to early July.
All in all, this provides the Marine Museum with tremendous exposure, both at the Ontario
Legislature and in local papers, social media, and back at the museum when the exhibit "comes
home".

Subject: RE: Meeting re the Marine Msueum Date: 08/01/17 06:11 PM
To: mchickey<mchickey@amtelecom.net> From: curator<curator@bayham.on.ca>
Hi again, Bev,
I've been asked to come up with an exhibit on the theme of transportation as part of the Elgin
County museums' 2017 exhibit schedule. There will be promotional material prepared for all the
museums, so we want to be part of that.
I hadn't given it much thought when I was told about it at a meeting last year, since I knew my
contract ended at the end of 2016. As you may know, it has been extended for a whole year-
which I am very excited about. Now I have to prepare this exhibit and I wanted to get your thoughts
on my plan. It has to be in to Mike Baker at the Elgin County Museum by the end of this week.
I'm thinking that the lighthouse and ship travel be linked to land travel, both the Plank Road and
the railway,to show how Port Burwell was an early hub of transpotation over the years. I would
keep the focus on Port Burwell, showing how these methods of transportation came together there
and the effects they had over the years on the community.
Let me know if you think this will be interesting and suitable, and I will procede. I will need a catchy
title too, but that will come once I get the ok.
