I would certainly consider putting my name forward again in the future; but in the present circumstances, I find myself so significantly out of sync on elements of board composition and relations with Council on Edison matters that it is in the best interests of both the board and myself that I step aside. I wish to express my wholehearted admiration for the members of this Board, who have consistently worked towards positive, creative and forward-looking outcomes. I am particularly proud of this year's successful re-introduction of the position of Curator, and most grateful to Council for recognizing the value of that initiative and for continuing to support it as the museum collections move forward in an integrated vision. I can not speak highly enough of CAO Paul Shipway, Museums Coordinator Margaret Underhill, and Administrative Support Brenda Gibbons, whose knowledge, leadership, and professionalism are of the highest calibre. Once the board makes a decision we put forward an Advisory Board Resolution to Council accepting the resignation and a resolution request of Council to either re-advertise or reconsider previously submitted applications. This would go to Council at the first meeting in October. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thanks. Correspondence 7.1 For Information Only None 7.2 Action Required a) Report on Updates/Activities to date The Chairman updated that Council is expected to return the Edison Museum building back to the estate of the original donor as that was a condition of donation transfer, should the building not remain a museum. He noted that the museum contains Edison, Bayham and Bayham Historical Society artifacts and documents of both Edison and local historical interest. It appears that Council's intent is to reduce the number of museum artifacts by 2/3. He added that Bayham Council on August 18t" gave the group two weeks to come up with a plan, evidence of support and to report back to Council at the September 1st meeting. Immediate action was taken to reach out to the public through local groups and organizations, the media, facebook, direct emails, word of mouth, hand-outs and a petition at Watermelon Fest, interested churches and Bayham's Family Table. b) Guests - Comments/considerations/responses Angela Bobier, Cultural Manager of the Backus-Page House, Wallacetown, noted her concerns when she read of our situation and contacted the group right away. She suggested that the group determine, "What is the Municipal challenge" and demonstrate to Council how they can address it, with the suggestion that the group consider going independent. The Chairman updated the status of the Bayham Historical Society and that it has determined it will dismantle this year due to lack of new recruits to fill the vacancies as their membership ages. However, a letter has gone out requesting the disbandment be put on hold until it is determined whether Council will extend the time period required to develop a suitable plan of action response. David Harding, representing Heritage Port Stanley, noted that their group had grown from about 10 members a number of years ago to 50+ mainly by building within the community and offered other positive suggestions. Members of the Finch family, relatives of the late Nora Edison Coombe raised concerns as to what would happen to the family artifacts such as Nora's jewelry and the family photographs. It was noted that the normal process to disperse the collection would range between offering collection items to other museums, public sale and/or discard. It was suggested the group develop a plan, excluding the current building, to present to Council for discussion. c) Discussion followed. Several persons spoke on the subject of closure and loss of artefacts. d) Preparation for Council meeting September 1 Appointment of Committee executive and relevant submission to Council Moved by Ken Andrews Seconded by Bob Graham That appointment to an executive committee be as follows: Chairperson Mathew Schafer Vice-Chairperson Darya Rousseau Treasurer Ray Maddox Secretary Lynda Millard; That a list of persons willing to support and volunteer time on behalf of the group be solicited, in writing, and the number that have signed up to August 30th, the letter dated August 30th from the Finch family and other relevant information be provided to Council; That the signed petitions to show support and help save the Bayham and Edison Museum Collections be provided to Council; That the Group supports the goal to save the Edison, Bayham and Bayham Historical Society artifacts and documents, as applicable, and to establish a facility in Bayham to store and display them; That Council provide a copy of the building inspection report which was used to close the Edison Museum building and all the paperwork for the original transfer of the house to the Village of Vienna; And that the Group act under the name of the "Friends of Edison".
